US Authorities Tighten Control Over Bitcoin Mining Hardware
According to IT BOLTWISE® x Artificial Intelligence, U.S. authorities have significantly increased their scrutiny over the import of Bitcoin mining hardware. This move is expected to have far-reaching consequences for major manufacturers and miners. Recent seizures of Bitcoin mining hardware at U.S. entry ports indicate a broader enforcement strategy targeting both large manufacturers and individual miners.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), at the request of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), has begun confiscating Bitcoin mining ASICs at various entry points across the country. Documents reviewed by industry insiders reveal that the CBP has extended its actions to include mining devices from MicroBT and Canaan, in addition to previously seized Antminer S21 and T21 units. These devices were held due to their AI chips from the now-restricted company Sophgo. For the first time, Bitmain units have also been confiscated.
The CBP cited U.S. legal code 19 USC 1595a(c)(2)(A) as the basis for these seizures, which restrict unauthorized communication devices, radio frequency equipment causing interference, and hardware lacking FCC approval or compliance. Taras Kulyk, co-founder and CEO of Synteq Digital, noted that nearly all Asian ASIC manufacturers are facing customs clearance issues. A source confirmed that several customers have had hardware seized at new ports beyond Detroit and San Francisco, prompting one company to seek legal partners to challenge the seizures.
This crackdown aligns with the Trump administration's efforts to bring critical silicon-based industries back to the U.S. Given the scale of Bitcoin mining operations and their reliance on silicon, this move supports Trump's goal of bolstering domestic miners to extract the remaining 1.042 million Bitcoins.
