Texas Power Grid Overloaded as AI Data Centers Surpass Bitcoin Miners' Energy Demand

The Texas power grid is facing unprecedented challenges as artificial intelligence (AI) data centers flood the state with massive energy requests. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) reported that demand for large-scale power is expected to reach 226 gigawatts by 2025, nearly four times the 63 gigawatts recorded at the end of 2024. This shift marks a dramatic change in the state's energy landscape, with AI companies now accounting for approximately 73% of new power requests, overshadowing the previous dominance of Bitcoin miners.

“This development is forcing regulators to rethink their energy distribution strategies.”

ERCOT received 225 applications for large-scale power by mid-November 2025, surpassing the total number of applications received from 2022 to 2024. The second quarter alone saw the highest activity with 78 applications totaling over 70,000 megawatts. Many individual AI projects now require more than one gigawatt of power, equivalent to the consumption of a large gas power plant, but used solely for computational processes.

HIVE Digital Reports Record Bitcoin Production and Expands Mining Capacity

HIVE Digital Technologies Ltd. reported a record production of 290 Bitcoin in November 2025, marking a 182% increase from 103 Bitcoin in the same month of the previous year. The company achieved an average daily production of 9.7 Bitcoin with an average hash rate of 23.5 exahashes per second (EH/s), peaking at 25.4 EH/s during the reporting month. HIVE's fleet efficiency was recorded at 17.5 joules per terahash, producing 12.3 Bitcoin per EH/s.

HIVE completed the commissioning of its latest ASICs at the Valenzuela Phase 3 site in Paraguay two weeks ahead of schedule, bringing its total capacity to 300 megawatts (MW). The company plans to develop another hydropower-operated data center with 100 MW capacity in Yguazú, expected to be fully operational by the third quarter of 2026.

Nvidia CEO Claims Bitcoin Converts Wasted Energy into Currency

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has challenged one of the biggest criticisms of Bitcoin, stating that it transforms wasted energy into a currency that can be freely moved worldwide. During a panel discussion on AI and global power demand, Huang emphasized that Bitcoin mining can address the daily challenges faced by power grids, particularly the issue of energy waste. He noted that more than half of Bitcoin mining globally utilizes renewable or stranded energy sources.

Huang's comments come as Texas wasted 8 terawatt-hours of wind and solar energy in 2024, with Brazil experiencing even greater losses in 2025. His perspective suggests that Bitcoin can monetize excess energy that would otherwise go unused, potentially transforming energy economics.

Key Insights: Huang's remarks provide a new viewpoint on Bitcoin's energy consumption, highlighting its potential to utilize wasted energy effectively.

American Bitcoin Corp. Makes Significant Bitcoin Purchase

Eric Trump's American Bitcoin Corp. (ABTC) has made a strategic acquisition of 416 Bitcoin valued at approximately $38 million, increasing its total Bitcoin holdings to 4,783 BTC. This purchase was made at an average price of $91,346 per BTC. The company is now ranked 22nd among the largest Bitcoin-holding companies, surpassing notable firms like GameStop and HIVE Digital Technologies.

American Bitcoin Corp. reported a revenue of $64 million for the third quarter of 2025, a significant increase from $11.6 million in the same period last year. The company's net profit reached $3.5 million, compared to a net loss of $0.6 million in the previous year, indicating a strong growth trajectory in the Bitcoin mining sector.

Wow this article is really intresting! I cant beleive how fast the AI Data Center demands are goin up! I mean like 226 gigawatts by 2025 is just insane, like how can the power grid even handle that? Annyways, I saw someone mention the Bitcoin miners and I think Bitcoin was already using a lot of power but now it seems AI is taking that over. Kinda wild how fast tech is changing, I guess this means they gonna have to comeup with new ways to produce energy or what? And it's kinda weird don’t you think that Bitcoin mining was like the big deal and now its AI like swooping in and taking over. But like do we even know if AI is really benefitting society in the long run or just burning up all this energy? It's hard to say but I do get that it could be saving some wasted energy too, Huang said so right? Like converting wasted energy into something valuable is a cool point.

But about that Fleet Mining thing, I mean they are giving bonuses? That’s like a super sweet deal but like is it too good to be true? I mean earning 8000 dollars a day sounds mad but do they have hidden fees or somthing? Also, did HIVE really increase production that much? How is that even posibble? They have their own hydropower? Sounds like they’re going to do good things, but I just hope they don’t use up the planet's resources while doing so. Anyway, thanks for the article, didn’t expected to learn so much today!

Article Summary

Texas's power grid is overwhelmed by AI data centers, which now dominate energy requests over Bitcoin miners, prompting a reevaluation of energy distribution strategies. Meanwhile, companies like Fleet Mining and HIVE Digital are making significant strides in the cloud mining sector and Bitcoin production respectively, highlighting growing institutional interest in cryptocurrency.
