Solo Miner Hits the Jackpot: $263,000 Earned Through Bitcoin Mining
In an extraordinary turn of events, a solo Bitcoin miner has managed to secure a reward of $263,000 by successfully mining a block on the Bitcoin blockchain. According to Newsbit, the miner achieved this feat using a Bitaxe device, a relatively modest piece of equipment with a hash rate of 480 Gigahash per second (GH/s). For comparison, large-scale mining operations typically employ machines with a computational power of up to 230,000 GH/s. This achievement makes the miner the 297th individual to find a block through the solo.ckpool platform.
The odds of such a success are staggeringly low. Con Kolivas, a representative of solo.ckpool, explained that a miner of this scale has less than a 1 in a million chance of finding a block each day. Statistically, it would take approximately 3,500 years for a device like the Bitaxe to achieve this. Despite these odds, the miner's efforts paid off, earning a total of 3.15 Bitcoin. This includes the standard block subsidy of 3.125 Bitcoin and an additional 0.025 Bitcoin from transaction fees.
While this story may inspire others to try their luck, Newsbit notes that Bitcoin mining is generally not profitable in regions like the Netherlands due to high electricity costs. For those still interested, mining can be approached as a hobby or a lottery-like endeavor. Devices such as the Bitaxe Gamma 601, which is three times more powerful than the one used by the successful miner, are available for purchase at a price of $158. However, it is important to manage expectations, as solo miners rarely achieve such results.
