Investor Tobias Reichmuth heats his new villa with Bitcoin mining
In St. Moritz, investor Tobias Reichmuth has constructed an extraordinary residence named Villa Volt, which combines innovation, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology. According to Bilanz, the villa is equipped with a range of unique features, including a cryotherapy chamber set to minus 110 degrees, an ice bath, sauna, steam bath, gym, meditation room, and an indoor pool. These elements reflect Reichmuth's focus on health and longevity, a theme also present in his Zurich-based Longevity Clinic.
The highlight of Villa Volt is its sustainable energy concept. Reichmuth, founder of SUSI Partners, has implemented ten geothermal boreholes and solar panels to achieve energy self-sufficiency. The entire facade of the villa is covered with black solar panels, which generate electricity even under snowy conditions. Reichmuth states, "We only need external electricity if the sun doesn't shine for three days." A key component of this system is a Bitcoin miner developed by the Swiss start-up RY3T. This 5-MW device not only mines Bitcoin but also provides heating for the villa. The miner's heated cooling water is used to warm the floors and the pool. In the first month, the system mined Bitcoin worth approximately 300 Swiss francs, with no additional electricity costs, as the miner operates on the villa's solar power.
Reichmuth emphasizes that making a house largely self-sufficient is financially feasible for anyone building in a similar location. However, he notes that the sustainability aspect accounts for only a single-digit percentage of the overall cost. While the exact cost of Villa Volt remains undisclosed, Reichmuth reveals that the property has already attracted purchase offers during its construction phase. The villa spans five floors with a total living area of 550 square meters, and properties in the area command prices of up to 50,000 Swiss francs per square meter.
The construction of Villa Volt began in 2023, following the purchase of the land in 2021. Despite the challenges of building in St. Moritz, such as restrictions on crane usage during peak seasons and difficulties with concrete mixers in snowy conditions, Reichmuth found the process enjoyable and views the project as a form of personal retirement planning. He states, "I would build again immediately; it’s fun and serves as my private pension plan."
